What is Beard or Mustache Transplantation?

Just like in hair transplantation, in beard transplantation, donor hairs taken from the nape area are transferred to the determined area using the sedated FUE method. It is a procedure applied with fine-tipped micro punches of 0.6 – 0.7 mm.

What causes beard or mustache loss?

Autoimmune disorders, various skin conditions, hormonal imbalances, past accidents, injuries, or trauma can lead to beard or mustache loss. Just like in hair treatments, the method to be followed for beard and mustache restoration is hair transplantation. Cosmetic products or medications do not meet the expectations of patients. Alopecia areata, also known as patchy hair loss, can also cause hair loss in areas such as the scalp, beard, eyebrows, and eyelashes.

What are the advantages of the FUE technique in beard and mustache transplantation?

The FUE technique, as used in hair transplantation, is also preferred in beard and mustache transplantation. With this method, the harvested follicles can be implanted in the desired direction. It can be applied as a customized procedure to areas where the beard does not grow or where it grows sparsely, according to the individual’s aesthetic preferences.

How is beard or mustache transplantation done?

  • First, after receiving a visual of the patient’s beard or mustache, the specialist doctor (if the patient comes to the clinic, the doctor can make a face-to-face evaluation regarding the transplantation) evaluates the number of grafts to be transplanted, the area to be treated, and other operational steps. The patient is then informed. For patients coming from abroad, the operation date and treatment plan are arranged, including accommodation and transfer services.
  • Local anesthesia is applied to numb the area from which the hair follicles will be harvested.
  • The grafts are collected one by one using the FUE technique and prepared for transplantation.
  • Channels are opened for the collected grafts.
  • The hair follicles are placed into the opened channels, and the operation is completed.

Who can undergo beard or mustache transplantation?

Beard or mustache transplantation is performed on individuals who do not have facial hair (beard or mustache) due to various reasons, such as alopecia, trauma, burns, or injuries. The procedure can also be carried out for those with sparse hair follicles, if the condition causes psychological discomfort to the individual. After surgery, this procedure can be preferred to conceal scars in the beard and mustache area. Additionally, when the beard and mustache do not appear symmetrical or aesthetically balanced, transplantation can be performed.

How many grafts (hair follicles) are required?

In beard transplantation, generally 3000 or more grafts are sufficient and provide successful results. For mustache transplantation, the required number of grafts may vary between 400-800, depending on the area to be transplanted.

How long does beard or mustache transplantation take?

The duration of the procedure varies depending on the size of the area to be transplanted. Mustache transplantation typically takes between 2-4 hours. Beard transplantation, covering a larger area, generally takes between 4 to 8 hours.
